The Saturday after Thanksgiving is when millions of business owners open their doors to holiday shoppers. American Express started Small Business Saturday in 2010 as a way to help small businesses affected by the economic recession. One year after the first Small Business Saturday, the Shop Small movement gained momentum across the nation. That same year, the U.S. Senate unanimously passed a resolution in support of the day. By 2018, U.S. consumers reported spending $17.8 million at independent retailers and restaurants on Small Business Saturday. Spending on Small Business Saturday has now generated about $103 billion since it started in 2010. 99.9% of businesses in America are small businesses. This year, the Greater Arlington Chamber of Commerce wants to help promote small businesses in the greater Arlington area.
