2020 has brought unprecedented milestones and challenges to the University of Texas at Arlington. Students are continuing to passionately pursue their education amidst the COVID-19 pandemic, and UTA has adapted to continue to provide them all with a quality education. Interim President Teik Lim discussed the University’s COVID-19 response among other topics during the State of the University event held on Wednesday, October 28.
Hundreds of members of the Maverick community tuned in via Facebook Live for a conversation with Dr. Lim during the State of the University event. While answering questions about becoming Interim President after a leadership transition, Dr. Lim stressed that his priority was UTA’s students. Early on, professors effectively pivoted to teaching virtually. In May, UTA ranked among the best schools in Texas capable of educating students during the COVID-19 pandemic. For the Fall semester, UTA has proactively tested high-risk students, encouraged widespread masks and minimized people on campus without decreasing enrollment.
Despite the challenges brought on by the COVID-19 pandemic, nothing has stopped UTA from having a monumental year. In 2020, UTA has enrolled its largest freshman class, and a record number of degrees were confirmed. UTA has also seen an increase in student engagement this year. As Dr. Lim mentioned, the record-breaking growth shows how the university was already well on its way to attracting more students with its affordability and UTA’s ideal location at the heart of a booming metroplex.
“The future of this university is bright, and we are on a great trajectory,” said Dr. Lim. When looking to the future, Dr. Lim wants UTA to continue to provide accessible education and prepare its students for the workforce while pursuing Texas Tier One Status.
Whether providing outstanding education or addressing important societal challenges, UTA enhances the quality of life in Texas and beyond. UTA has an annual economic impact of $17.1 billion.
