Perfecting Your Pitch: 30-second elevator pitches
An elevator pitch is a key tool for business owners, managers, and representatives. It is even more important for people who attend Networking Events, and are frequently asked, “So, what do you do?”
An elevator pitch is a brief (30-seconds!) way of introducing yourself, getting across a key point or two, and making a connection with someone. It is a great way to generate interest from a potential customer to the point they would like to hear more.
A good elevator pitch includes the following components:
- It get’s people’s attention.
- It tells people what you do.
- It highlights your value proposition, and distinguishes you from others.
- It is relatable.
While a Good elevator pitch is essential, a Bad elevator pitch is detrimental. Below is a list of key things NOT to include with your pitch:
- Do NOT make your pitch too long.
- Do NOT talk about yourself too much.
- Do NOT get too technical, or use “industry terms” your audience may not understand.
- Do NOT deliver your Elevator Pitch at the wrong time.
There are many different types of Elevator Pitches. It is important to build your pitch in a style you are comfortable with, and a style that resonates with your audience. Keep in mind your audience could be a one-on-one discussion, or you might be pitching to a room full of people at a networking event.
Different types of Elevator Pitches include the following:
- Ask a question.
- Leverage your credibility.
- Use data.
- Go with humor or a light-hearted approach.
Regardless of the type of pitch you use, Practice-Practice-Practice. By being confident in your pitch, you will immediately start to build a relationship with the people who hear it. Remember: Even if the person you’re pitching to doesn’t need your products, goods, or services, they may be able to introduce you to someone who does.
