This summer, Theatre Arlington opened their curtains to selected junior high and high school Arlington ISD students for a brand-new two-week musical camp.
Collaborations between AISD and Theatre Arlington are not new as they have partnered many times throughout the years, but this is the first year that they have given students who are passionate about musical theatre the opportunity to kick off their Sunday shoes and live out their dreams on stage.
For the inaugural year of the program, Theatre Arlington chose one of the greatest musicals of all time, Footloose. Attendees of the camp learned that their time to dance is now and blew their performances out of the park.
Within nine days, these students had the choreography, and music down, while the crew had the props, costumes, lights and sound on lock. It truly seems like Arlington has quite the talent running through our veins.
Micah Green, Arlington ISD coordinator of theater and dance, was one of the driving forces of connecting the Theater with AISD. “I love that students are representative from across the district; I love that this has never been done before, It’s community building within theatre.”
The 30 camp participants who are actively interested in musical theatre were chosen by their theatre teachers throughout the district. On day one of camp, the students were asked to audition with two 30 second songs, a short choreography routine and a cold reading of the script. In no time, the 30 students were then casted and immediately got to work on what would be a life-changing performance.
We are so proud of all these students as well as Micah Green. At the Chamber, one of the ways we campion economic and community prosperity is through developing the community’s future and this camp is doing just that! Arlington ISD continues to amaze us with their partnerships and the creative ways in which they educate our youth. We are so excited to see what musical they choose for their sophomore year!
