Business Profile: Kevin Bowens Photography

Kevin Bowens, a renowned Texas-based photographer with over 30 years of experience, got his start in an unlikely way. In the late 70s, Kevin’s brother asked him to help with a film project that required a 35 mm film camera. His brother opted out shortly after, but Kevin quickly realized he had found his passion.

From then on, he wanted to capture moments and create a record of those moments etched in a photograph forever.

Bowens, having been featured in D magazine, among others, now owns a successful photography business in Arlington, Texas, where he does photography for weddings, engagements, high school seniors, headshots, interior design, general contractors, and even repairs old photographs.

Kevin got his start in business as a young man managing multiple dentist offices in Texas. Though not his passion, this experience proved helpful for managing his own photography business.

Upon discovering he wanted to be a photographer, Kevin learned through trial and error, reading, and exploring different ways to use the camera. To further his understanding of working behind the lens, he attended multiple higher education schools including the Video Technical Institute for Electrical Engineering and Video in Dallas, Mountain View College, Eastfield College, Cedar Valley College, and Texas A&M University.

Professors quickly recognized his talent, and one of his professors, David McCoy, even asked Kevin, “Why are you in this class? You are just as good as I am.” The two later became friends, with McCoy giving Kevin his first real camera.

When asked what his one piece of advice would be to aspiring photographers or business owners, he said, “Don’t rush into anything. Plan, learn, prepare, and make sure it is something you love to do.”

Kevin chose Arlington for his business because he enjoys the melting pot of people and knew when he saw the Cowboys and other big entities it would be a good place for opportunities, proving true for his business.

Bowens continues pursuing his passion for photography and doesn’t see that ending anytime soon. One of his favorite quotes is “photographers never die; our shutter stops.”
