Applications Open for Arlington Boards and Commissions

“Gee, I’d like to get involved in the community, but I really don’t know where to start.” If you have been using that excuse to avoid service, quit reading now or that excuse will be out the window.

The Mayor and City Council members appoint citizens to 21 boards and commissions. Members of these boards and commissions provide citizen input to the elected officials and make recommendations on policy issues. Some are advisory positions. Some have final decision making authority. Terms are two years. Best of all, the Mayor and Council are asking for applications right now.

Have a passion for Arlington as a major destination city for conventions and tourism? You can apply to be on the Arlington Convention and Visitors Board of Directors. If public transportation is important to you, you can apply for the Special Transportation Advisory Board. Concerned about construction trends in the city? Apply for the Planning and Zoning Commission. Other choices include the Mechanical and Plumbing Appeals Board, the Citizens Environmental Commission and the Animal Services Center Advisory Board. There are fourteen more not listed here. There is a spot for most every interest.

On the application form, which is online, you will be asked to pick a first, second and third choice from among the 21 possible boards and commissions. You will then be asked about your experience and qualifications to contribute to the mission of the group you selected. The Mayor and your City Council Member will select from among the most qualified applicants and make appointments.
