JPS Named Best Hospital for America by Washington Monthly

The John Peter Smith (JPS) Health Network tops three Washington Monthly lists: Best Hospitals for America, Best Teaching Hospitals for America and Best Safety Net Hospitals for America.

DMagazine and the Fort Worth Business Press quickly posted that JPS was named the best hospital IN America. Being the best for America is slightly different from being the best in America. Best for America seems more important and better.

The Washington Monthly in conjunction with the Lown Institute, a non-partisan health care think tank, ranked hospitals on a combination of three criteria: patient outcomes (mortality rates, etc.), civic leadership (providing care for lower-income and minority members of the community) and value of care (avoiding over treatment, avoiding low value services). On this service to the community combined scale, JPS was judged best among the “very large” hospitals in America.

A detailed look at the Lown Institute’s hospital ranking tool reveals that JPS “Civic Leadership” pushed them to the top of the overall rankings. Lown defines civic leadership as “Reflects commitment to equity, inclusion, and community health.” Everyone connected with JPS, from Robert Earley, President and CEO, on down, can take pride in Lown’s evaluation of their work. Great Job JPS team. The citizens of Tarrant County are proud of you too.

It is easy to think of John Peter Smith as a hospital in Fort Worth. Actually, the JPS system operates 66 individual units throughout Tarrant County including seven locations in Arlington.
