Greater Arlington Chamber’s Latino Business Group Celebrates Día De Los Muertos

For the first time, the Latino Business Group, in partnership with the Dan Dipert Career & Technology Center, brought the community together to celebrate Día de los Muertos. The Latino Business Group invited people from all backgrounds to connect and learn more about the Latino/Latinx community’s rich culture. This exciting virtual happy hour held on October 29 featured a fun-filled night with networking and outstanding performances.

Día de los Muertos is a special time to honor our departed loved ones while celebrating their lives and is observed November 1 through November 2. This vibrant holiday originated in Mexico with the Aztecs, Maya, Toltec and other indigenous groups honoring their ancestors but is now recognized throughout Latin America and in the United States. Recent movies such as Disney’s Coco and The Book of Life have increased the holiday’s popularity while promoting a greater understanding and appreciation for Mexican culture.

The Latino Business Group’s virtual Día de los Muertos celebration began with Ballet Folklorico Macehuani and Mariachi Imperial’s traditional performances. Colorful and lively dancing and music are a significant part of Día de los Muertos events worldwide and define the holiday as a cheerful affair. Even though Día de los Muertos is a time when people remember the dead, it is not a somber time. Instead, people celebrate life and pass down traditions and memories.

The Latino Busines Group made sure to share in the festivities by incorporating the fantastic youth in our community. Talented students from the Dan Dipert Career & Technology Center audiovisual program made the event possible by editing and recording the virtual Día de los Muertos Happy Hour footage. The event also highlighted the students who have benefitted from the fantastic opportunities available to them at the Center.
