Día de los Muertos originated in Mexico and is November 1 through November 2. This special holiday includes vibrant celebrations that honor the deceased and is becoming more widely recognized in the United States. Recent movies such as Disney’s Coco and The Book of Life have increased the holiday’s popularity while inviting people to learn more about Mexican culture.
On Saturday, November 2, the Arlington Public Library invited the public to a Día de los Muertos festival. Attendees enjoyed live performances, storytime, interactive activities and a workshop with award-winning author and illustrator Juana Martinez-Neal. The Arlington Police Department’s Amigos en Azul provided free Kona Ice cones.
The Arlington Public Library partnered with Paso a Paso to bring this free event to the public. While many organizations coordinated to celebrate, local businesses also invited greater Arlington to honor their deceased loved ones.
Dignity Memorial and Moore Funeral Home hosted a free Día de los Muertos event on Saturday, November 2. The event featured a live mariachi band, food trucks and face painting. Participants also contributed to the community altar and visited their loved ones buried at the commentary.
