On Jan. 14, the 89th Texas Legislature gaveled into regular session, setting the stage for 150 House Representatives and 31 Senators to shape the state’s policies. Held every two years, the 140-day session enables lawmakers to approve the biennial state budget, introduce and vote on new laws and address matters such as emergency appropriations and gubernatorial appointments made during recess.
The first order of business was to elect the Speaker of the House. Representative David Cook, former Mayor of Mansfield whose District 96 includes parts of Arlington, lost in a 55-85 vote to Rep. Dustin Burrows, a Republican from Lubbock, who secured the position with a coalition of 36 Republicans and 49 Democrats.
The Greater Arlington Chamber’s State Legislative Agenda supports policies that promote and improve the overall vitality and prosperity of the Texas economy. We seek to continue Texas’ economic success and encourage effective policymaking that ensures we have the necessary tools, talent, infrastructure and healthcare systems for economic and community prosperity. We work diligently to amplify the voice of our members at all levels of government and come together to speak with our local legislative representatives with one voice.
As the session unfolds, expect robust debates, policy shifts and decisions that will impact Texas’s future.
