Last Thursday, Six Flags Entertainment Corporation announced it is making Globe Life Park its new global corporate headquarters. The company recently signed a 15-year lease for the centerfield office build.
More than 120 full-time employees will enjoy the scenic view from Globe Life Park, which will now host soccer and XFL football games.
Six Flags has a special place in the hearts of Arlington residents. In 1961, Six Flags opened its first theme park in Arlington, Texas. Since then, Arlington locals and tourists have enjoyed thrilling rides, themed celebrations and plenty of family fun.
“The contributions it’s made to our lives, in just the entertainment aspect of it. We welcome those folks here,” Henry Lewczyk said, with the Greater Arlington Chamber of Commerce.
As a part of the Entertainment Capital of Texas, Six Flags has played a significant role in Arlington’s growth. Six Flags was one of the original venues in Arlington’s Entertainment District. In 1996, the success of Six Flags brought Wet‘n Wild, later renamed Six Flags Hurricane Harbor, to Arlington. Six Flags Hurricane Harbor is now the largest water park in the southwestern United States.
The Founder of the original Six Flags theme park, Texas businessman Angus Wynne, could not have imagined the development of Six Flags and the community that surrounds it.
Over the past 50 years, Arlington’s Entertainment District has evolved. Downtown now boasts a $250 million entertainment complex and a $150 million flagship hotel. Arlington has more than 14 million annual visitors, and it is expected to reach 17 million this year.
“If you look over the last few years, the amazing growth that’s happened in the entertainment district, and then to go full circle with Six Flags. Having opened here in 1961 and now just shy of 60 years later, they bring their world headquarters here which overlooks the original park. It’s an amazing story,” Lewczyk said.
