House District 92 has three Republican candidates seeking to replace Representative Jonathan Stickland, who is not running for reelection. Former Bedford Mayor Jim Griffin, former Bedford City Councilman Jeff Cason and Taylor Gillig have filed for the primary.
All of the other House Republican incumbents: Stephanie Klick, Tony Tinderholt, Matt Krause, and Giovani Capriglione are unopposed in the primary. Bill Zedler had drawn a primary opponent when Mansfield Mayor David Cook filed. However, Mr. Zedler withdrew from the race for health reasons. Although filing reopened for District 96, Mayor Cook is currently unopposed.
On the Senate side, two Republican Incumbents, Senator Jane Nelson and Senator Brian Birdwell will be unopposed in the primary. Senators Kelly Hancock and Beverly Powell are not up for reelection this cycle.
Republican Primaries in the area served by the Coalition of East Tarrant Chambers have been quiet since the Tea Party stopped “primarying” candidates. The primaries in March of 2020 will only have one contested district in the House and none in the Senate. (Pending the extended filing deadline for District 96.)
On the Democratic Primary side, Representative Chris Turner is unopposed in the primary and did not draw a Republican opponent. All of the other Democratic Party races have one or more primary candidates. This means all of the races in the general election in November except for Turner’s district, will have at least two candidates from whom to choose.
