The Greater Arlington Chamber of Commerce Veterans Business Council proudly unveiled a striking new mural in downtown Arlington honoring the Medal of Honor on June 5.
Underwritten by the Chamber’s Veterans Business Council, the mural is a powerful public reminder that the timeless values of the Medal of Honor – courage, sacrifice, commitment, integrity, citizenship, and patriotism – are not just ideals for those in uniform; they form the foundation of what we stand for as Americans.
“Veterans understand the
power of service and sacrifice,” Persons B. “Griff” Griffith IV, Chair of the Chamber’s Veterans Business Council, said. “By supporting this mural, our Council wanted to offer more than a tribute; we wanted to create a daily call to action. One that inspires young people, families, and business owners to live with integrity, serve their communities as engaged citizens, and carry a spirit of patriotism that honors the legacy of every Medal of Honor recipient.”
The mural, painted by U.S. Army veteran and local artist Juan Velazquez, was completed with support from Downtown Arlington, the National Medal of Honor Museum, Curnutt & Hafer LLP, and the City of Arlington, bringing together key players across the city to reflect and celebrate what unites the community.
The mural’s centerpiece features one of the three official Medal of Honor designs – the version awarded to the Navy, Marine Corps and Coast Guard. At its heart is Minerva, the Roman goddess of wisdom, arts and military skill, depicted driving away Discord to symbolize the triumph of wisdom and peace over conflict. Flowing behind the medallion is a light blue ribbon adorned with stars, a tribute to the Medal of Honor’s iconic neck ribbon, which bears 13 white stars representing the original thirteen colonies and the founding values of our nation.
“This mural is a reminder to live with integrity and courage every day,” Michael Jacobson, President & CEO of the Greater Arlington Chamber of Commerce, said. “It represents what we believe at the Chamber: ‘Together, We Succeed.’ When we work together and unite with these values, we unlock a greater purpose.”
Located on the west wall of Curnutt & Hafer LLP’s newest building in Downtown Arlington, the muralserves as a symbolic link to the National Medal of Honor Museum in Arlington’s Entertainment District. The proximity of the artwork to the museum reflects the Chamber’s vision of a city connected by purpose, values and community pride.
“This project is a shining example of what can happen when partners come together for a cause greater than themselves,” Kelly Curnutt, Chairman of the Chamber Board and Partner at Curnutt & Hafer LLP, said. “We’re proud to be part of this effort to inspire reflection, gratitude and civic pride through art.”
Chris Cassidy, National Medal of Honor President & CEO and Navy SEAL Veteran, and Jim Ross, Arlington Mayor and Marine Corps Veteran, gave brief remarks at the ceremony alongside Greater Arlington Chamber CEO Jacobson and Curnutt & Hafer LLP founders, Curnutt and Doug Hafer.
