Protecting the independence of cities and counties, preserving the ability of independent school districts to partially abate property taxes to attract major capital investment, improving access to healthcare and protecting the electric grid are still the significant priorities of the Greater Arlington business community. These priorities are highlighted in the Texas Interim Legislative Agenda approved by the Board of Directors today at their December meeting.
The interim legislative agenda will guide the Greater Arlington Chamber’s advocacy efforts working with members of the Texas Legislature and their staff in the early preparation of issues and legislation which will eventually become a part of the 87th Texas Legislature that will convene in January of 2021.
Amplifying the voice of business in public policy is a major responsibility the Chamber assumes for members. Even though the Texas Legislature will not come back into session until January 12, 2021, there is work to be done now.
The Speaker of the House and the Lt. Governor have issued “interim charges” to their committees. These will be studied, and hearings will be held to determine what legislation will be proposed in the next session. Now is the time when ideas are coming together. Language is being drafted, and battle lines are being drawn.
