The Chamber has chosen “The Star” as the symbol for its highest community service honor, to be awarded to individuals that have made significant and lasting contributions to our community. Recipients are recognized at our Annual Meeting and Awards Dinner. This year, the Chamber is honored to recognize Dr. Joan Bergstrom M.D. as the 2019 Star Award Recipient.
Dr. Bergstrom has served the community in multiple ways. She is a founding partner of the first all-female OB/GYN practice in Arlington, Women’s Health Services. Through her practice, Dr. Bergstrom has offered exceptional healthcare to women for over 35 years. In addition to dedicating her life to the physical well-being of Arlington’s residents, she consistently engages in the community. She is the owner of Sanford Inn and Spa and has worked tirelessly on the revitalization of Downtown Arlington. Dr. Bergstrom also founded the Arlington ISD Education Foundation and served three years on the AISD school board. Her contributions to healthcare and education include mentoring female physicians and developing curriculum to teach sex education to local teens.
Dr. Bergstrom is admired for her passion and entrepreneurial spirit. Greater Arlington Chamber of Commerce Chair of the Board, Carl Caverns describes her as a “pioneer in Arlington” for opening the first all-female OB/GYN practice, becoming the first female Chief of Staff of the Texas Health Arlington Memorial Hospital, and being the first to open a large scale spa and bed and breakfast in Downtown Arlington. Mojy Haddad commends Dr. Bergstrom for having “the respect of her family, she’s got the respect of her staff, and she’s got the respect of the entire community.”
