The Greater Arlington Chamber’s 8th Annual Legends & Leaders, presented by SFC, celebrated two milestones that reflect Arlington’s continued growth and influence on both a local and global stage: the revitalization of the historic Caravan Court Hotel and the arrival of the FIFA World Cup 2026™, which will bring nine matches to Arlington this summer.

Hosted at the newly reimagined Caravan Court, the evening recognized the vision and leadership behind both achievements through conversations with Sam Mahrouq, Chairman and CEO of Mahrouq Enterprises International and ikon Technologies, and Dan Hunt, President of FC Dallas and Co-Chair of the North Texas FIFA World Cup 2026 Organizing Committee Board.

For Mahrouq, Caravan Court Hotel is more than a redevelopment project. It’s a tribute to the city that helped make his American dream possible.

Born in Amman, Jordan, Mahrouq moved to the United States at 18 years old and eventually built multiple successful businesses in Arlington. Looking back on his journey, he encouraged attendees to challenge the limitations they place on themselves.

“It’s more mental than anything else,” Mahrouq said. “A lot of times as a species, we think that we’re not the right background, we’re not good, we’re not talented enough, so this baggage that we’re born with, somehow we think that we can’t accomplish our dreams.”

Although Mahrouq arrived in America with little money and speaking limited English, he believed the opportunities available here were unlike anywhere else.

“In this land, you can do whatever your mind can envision and imagine,” he said. “If you remove all these blockers, you can do whatever your mind can think of.”

That mindset would eventually help him build businesses across multiple industries, including Arlington-based ikon Technologies, whose products can now be found across the country.

Mahrouq originally purchased Caravan Court with plans to expand one of his dealerships, but those plans changed as he learned more about the property’s history and significance to Arlington residents.

“It was the premier hotel in Arlington back in the day,” Mahrouq said.

As friends and community members shared stories about the property, Mahrouq began to seeit differently.

“It’s all these stories that got me to rethink the project,” he said. “I can’t just demolish this.”

Instead, he chose to preserve and reimagine the historic landmark, transforming it into a destination that celebrates Arlington’s past while contributing to its future.

“At the end of the day, I have lived here 41 years,” Mahrouq said. “I wanted to really bring something to this city as a thank you.”

Arlington City Manager Trey Yelverton also spoke about the momentum takingplace throughout the city, including continued investment along the Division Street corridor and efforts to strengthen connections between downtown Arlington and the Entertainment District. Together, those projects are helping create a more connected and vibrant Arlington experience.

The evening’s second conversation shifted from a historic Arlington landmark to one of the world’s largest sporting events.

Mayor Jim Ross sat down with Hunt to discuss the FIFA World Cup 26™ and Arlington’s role in welcoming the world to North Texas.

Hunt shared that his passion for soccer began at an early age when his parents took him to his first World Cup in Mexico.

“At the age of 10, my parents took me to my first World Cup in Mexico,” Hunt said. “I knew I had fallen in love with the game of soccer, and it’s been a lifelong passion.”

Today, Hunt serves as Chairman of the North Texas FIFA World Cup Organizing Committee and has spent years helping bring the tournament to the region.

Throughout the conversation, Hunt reflected on the long-term vision required to build successful organizations, communities and sporting events. Drawing on lessons learned from his father, Lamar Hunt, he emphasized the importance of leadership and partnership.

“You gotta have vision, you gotta have leaders, you gotta have connectivity, and that’s happening in Arlington, Texas,” Hunt said.

As Arlington prepares to host nine FIFA World Cup matches in 2026, Hunt encourages attendees to think beyond the matches themselves and focus on the memories the event will create.

“I hope that everyone creates lifetime memories for the friends and family at this World Cup,” he said. “I have so many great ones that you know, I smile every time I think about it.”
