Buttermilk Sky Pie Shop may be known for its delicious pies and upbeat employees, but they have been hiding some philanthropic efforts under their crust.
Over the past few months, the pie shop has been working alongside some amazing nonprofits in DFW. The “Pie it Forward” program is a monthly fundraising initiative in which the nonprofit of the month chooses a new flavor of pie to be featured at the Buttermilk Sky Pie Shop.
The flavors are chosen in partnership with each nonprofit and all proceeds that are raised from that particular pie flavor are donated to the organization. Some of the organizations that they have previously or are currently working with include, April’s partner, the River legacy Foundation, as well as Dental Health Arlington, Alliance for Children, Miracle League DFW, and the Green Oaks School.
Speaking of the Green Oaks School, Buttermilk Sky Pie Shop didn’t just partner with them for the “Pie it Forward program”, they are now offering internships to students who attend the school. Caroline, an employee at Buttermilk Sky Pie, works directly with the job coach of each intern to make sure students are learning the correct life skills that are beneficial to the intern and to the making of pies. She said, “Our first intern was able to find a hidden talent in laying the crust while our new intern is amazing at wet fillings and meringue!”
If you have never met Caroline her spunk and excitement about pies and life is absolutely contagious. She now has the opportunity to share her love of pie-making with these students. Caroline adjusts methods to make them more accessible for the interns and she says, “It is so rewarding to watch them learn new skills.”
The Buttermilk Sky employee also cultivates a relationship with each intern to make sure they are getting the most out of the experience and learning the skills necessary for the day-to-day work and the holiday pie rush. All in all this is a beautiful partnership that allows employees and interns at the pie shop to become like family and create delicious desserts for you to devour.
Buttermilk Sky Pie Shop is a place of inclusivity and where employees are comfortable being themselves. Caroline works from a unique management strategy, she wants everyone to have fun, be themselves, work hard, and put out something that the whole team can be proud of.
Since becoming more active in the Chamber, Caroline has started seeking out other members, but wants to help all local nonprofits. May’s nonprofit partner will be Isaiah 117 House with a tasty lemon pie. If you are a nonprofit organization and would like to partner with Buttermilk Sky Pie Shop, click here.
